2) 물질 : wood, plastic, paper, water, petrol(휘발유), soil

3) 과목 : history, art, music, English, Korean

4) 개념 : love, time, education, advice, information

5) 집합 : furniture(가구류), laggage(수화물), money(돈)

3. 명사 앞에 붙이는 단어

- 가산명사 앞에는 a/an, the, this/that, some, these/those 등이 붙는다. I'll buy a box of eggs for dinner.

- 불가산명사 앞에는 종종 some, this/that 등이 붙는다. There is some sugar in this tea.

4. 불가산명사를 세는 방법

1) 셈 단위를 이용하는 방법 : a piece of cake, a loaf of bread, a slice of toast

2) 용기를 이용하는 방법 : a carton(갑) of milk, a tin(깡통) of soup, a tube of toothpaste

3) 계량단위를 이용하는 방법 : a litre of water, a kilo of sugar, a metre of cotton(면, 목화)

 

* luggage(수화물) 역시 불가산명사로, 셈의 단위로서 'a piece of', 'a item of', 'a set of' 등을 사용한다.

5. 경우에 따라 구분이 달라지는 명사

1) coffee, tea 등은 음료의 종류로서 의미를 가질 때는 불가산 명사이지만, 잔에 담긴 경우 two cups of coffee를 two coffees라고도 한다.

A : I love coffee. Can I have a coffee? B : Sure, there is some coffee in the pot.

2) chicken, duck 등은 각 동물을 나타낼 때는 가산명사이지만, 요리 재료로서의 의미일 때와 같은 경우에는 불가산 명사이다.

A : I have 100 chickens on my farm. B : I love chicken, it's delicious!

3) Korean, Chinese 등은 언어의 한 종류로서 의미를 가질 때는 불가산명사이지만, 사람을 뜻할 때는 가산 명사이다.

A : I am a Korean. B : Oh, I can speak Korean.

4) chocolate은 식품의 한 종류로서는 불가산 명사이지만, 각각 가공된 조각을 지칭할 때는 가산명사로 사용될 수 있다.

A : I have a box of chocolates. Would you like a chocolate? B : I love chocolate! Can I have that white one?

5) paper의 경우에 종이라는 물질로서는 불가산명사이지만, 신문 혹은 팸플릿 등을 뜻할 때는 가산 명사로 사용된다.

A : I need some paper and pens.

A : In 1867, a young sailor was convicted of killing two crewmates and drinking their blood. The papers called him a 'Vampire'.

6) fruit 또한 과일류라는 집답을 말하고 싶으면 불가산 명사로 사용되지만, 각각의 개별적인 과일의 종류을 지칭할 때는 가산명사로 사용된다.

A : I like fruit. B : There are two fruits, four oranges and five apples. Take as many as you want.

* fruit과 달리 vegetable은 가산 명사로서 사용된다. 과일류를 말할 때는 fruit이지만, 채소류를 말할 때는 vegetables이다.
