'많다'는 영어로 뭐라고 하지? 영어 공부 6. much, many, a lot of

There are a lot of pens here but there are not much peper.

1. 정확한 수량은 모르지만 많은 양이나 많은 수를 나타낼 때 much, many, a lot of를 사용한다.

1) much

- 불가산명사 앞에 붙어서 부정문과 의문문에 사용된다. We haven't got much time.

- much 뒤에 오는 명사를 생략할 수도 있다. Why don't you buy it? It doesn't cost much.

- 정확한 수량 혹은 가격을 물을 때 how much를 사용할 수 있다. How much does it cost? It costs twelve dollars.

- 너무 많아서 부정적인 의미를 담을 때는 too much를 사용한다. We made too much food for breakfast.

2) many

- 복수명사 앞에 붙어서 부정문과 의문문에 사용된다. Are there many books in your room?

- many 뒤에 오는 명사를 생략할 수도 있다. Can I have some of your blocks? I haven't got many.

- 정확한 수량을 물을 때 how many를 사용할 수 있다. How many rooms are there in your house?

- 너무 많아서 부정적인 의미를 담을 때는 too many를 사용한다. There are too many people in the restaurant.

3) a lot of

- 복수명사 혹은 불가산명사 앞에 붙어서 긍정문, 부정문, 의문문에 사용된다. I have a lot of homework today.

- 명사와 함께 하지 않을 때는 of를 빼고 a lot으로만 사용한다. We learned a lot in this class.

- a lot of의 비격식적인 표현으로 lots of가 사용된다. There is lots of pepper in the soup.
