There are only a few cookies in the box.

1. 정확한 수량은 모르지만 적은 양이나 적은 수를 나타낼 때 a little과 a few를 사용한다.

1) a little

- 불가산명사 앞에 붙어서 사용된다. I think this soup needs a little salt.

- a little 뒤에 오는 명사를 생략할 수도 있다. A : Would you like some milk in your coffee? B : Yes, please, a little.

- a little 대신에 a bit of가 사용될 수 있다. We've got a bit of time. Let's have a coffee break.

2) a few

- 복수명사 앞에 붙어서 사용된다. There are a few shops near our house.

- a few 뒤에 오는 명사를 생략할 수도 있다. A : Do you have any time? B : Yes, just a few minutes.

2. 바라는 것보다 더 적은 수량을 나타낼 때는 not enough을 사용한다.

- 불가산명사 또는 복수명사 앞에 붙어서 사용된다. There aren't enough butter to make a cake.
