1. 다음과 같은 경우에 the를 사용한다.

1) 단 하나의 것을 지칭할 때 : The sun is very hot today.

2) 특정한 것을 지칭할 때 : I want the red one of them.

3) 사물을 명확히 알고 말할 때 : The train leaves at 10.

4) 이미 언급된 것을 다시 말할 때 : I borrowed a book yesterday. It was so interesting that I can't put the book down.

5) 하루의 어느 시점을 지칭할 때 : in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening (예외 : at night)

6) 악기를 지칭할 때 : I can play the guitar.

7) 신문 이름을 지칭할 때 : The New York Times

8) 언론 매체를 지칭할 때 : the radio, the Internet, the TV

9) 어느 곳의 상점 및 장소를 지칭할 때 : the bank, the cinema, the post office, the supermarket

10) 박물관, 영화관, 호텔 이름을 지칭할 때 : the Guggenheim Museum, the Giraffe Hotel

11) 위치를 지칭할 때 : on the left, in the middle, on the coast, in the east

12) 국명이 복수형, 공화국, 왕국 등인 경우 : the Netherlands, the United States, the People's Republic of China, the United Kingdom

13) 해양, 바다, 강, 산맥 등을 지칭하는 경우 : the Pacific Ocean, the Amazon, the Himalayas, the Andes

2. 발음

- 자음 앞에 있는 the는 /ðə/라고 발음한다.

- 모음 앞에 있는 the는 /ði/라고 발음한다.

3. 다음과 같은 경우에는 the를 쓰지 않는다.

1) 시간, 요일, 월 : at one of clock, on Monday, in January​

2) 식사시간 : breakfast, lunch, dinner​

3) 운동종목 : tennis, baseball, taekwondo

4) 학습과목 : English, art, history

5) 도로, 거리, 공원, 공항, 정류장 : Oxford Street, Richmond Park, Schiphol Airport

6) 마을, 도시, 주, 국가, 대륙 : New York, Wyoming, Korea, Asia

7) 산, 호수 : Sugarloaf Mountain, Peyto Lake

8) 사람 이름, 직위 : John, Uncle Jack, Professor Lee, Dr. Kim

9) 그 외 : at home, at work, in bed
